March 23: John David Richardson took a photograph of Keith in the house

February 22nd, 5:13am
Our Alexandria house blew up last night...we're ok. GIven the chaos and circumstances, I'm definnitely not going to be able to make it to Maysville today. Don't have our cell phones any more...they're inside the house and it appears the fire crews won't let us in to get them. In any case, we'll be in touch again soon. ALSO, your number is in our phones. Just in case we're not able to get them in the end, can you reprovide your phone number? Thanks!
John David is one of Barbara's photography students at NKU who, the day following the blast, we invited to photograph the intensely surreal presence of what's left of our home. He took us up on it because his work so often deals with the moment before or after a major life changing event occurs. He shot several pictures with me as the subject of such a real time life changing event, one of which can be seen below. John David exhibited this image in the NKU student show that is up right now.

For quite sometime the subject matter of my work has focused on reality. The visual narrative has consisted of a staged scene; a fabricated moment inspired by the encounters and experiences I have with others. This moment was different. One month ago, my professor Barbara Houghton and her husband Keith Farley endured something one shouldn't have to go through. At approximately 11p.m. a gas explosion occurred in their mid-century modern home in Alexandria, Kentucky. Barbara came to me with the idea of taking advantage of this tragic event by using Keith as the subject and the remains of the home as a backdrop. Sometimes there's a great beauty to be found in tragedy.
