May 12: after demo, spring comes

With the demolition now being completed, I returned to the site of the house this morning...if for no other reason...to see what currently calls to me for my attention. Following some significant cleanup, much of my focus fell upon what follows. Most has a connection with newly growing plants...a decisive connection with life that helps to balance out the recent onslaught of connections with death and destruction during the past ten weeks.

'Picture showing volunteer strawberries which apparently and unexpectedly rooted themselves last year in the soil well below the location in which I planted them on the side of the fence. There are several plants in this location that appeared out of nowhere during the past two or three weeks. Several berries are already formed with a couple of them just now beginning to turn red...'

'Looking at the site of the house with the rock wall, chimney, and concrete slab in the distance. Many of the raised beds I built and developed last year can be seen in the foreground. So far, I've prepared the four beds seen directly in front and the one seen on the far left side of the picture, which sits above yet another bed containing asparagus, which I planted early last year. Additionally, paint markings made by the surveyor this morning can be seen, which will assist in determining just how far forward the new house can sit toward the front of the lot.'

'A few of the strawberry plants I recently unearthed from their winter hibernation. Some already have blossoms...'

'A picture showing the four 10' gutters in which these specific strawberries have been grown (please note, I have other strawberries planted amongst the blueberry plants elsewhere) that I moved across the street to our neighbor's house last week in order to provide a safer environment in which to grow. Neither a demolition zone nor a construction zone offers a suitable environment for a growing plant. Some of the plants located toward the ends of the gutters didn't survive this past winter which was considerably colder than normal. For the most part, the strawberry plants seem to be taking hold again rather quickly...and quite happily so. I did accomplish several other things which I've not yet documented. In any case, this is a start and I'll provide further updates as the project progresses.'
